End-to-End Product Research, Design and Strategy for BrainSightAI's Health-tech Products

At BrainSightAI, a B2B health-tech start-up, I led several projects across UX Research and Design for platforms and products used by doctors, MRI technicians, hospital administrators, patients, caregivers and research stakeholders.

My work spanned 2 key products:

  • An AI powered Saas platform which automates the processing of patient MRI data to then provide doctors with insights used in surgery and the diagnosis and prognosis of various neurological and psychiatric conditions.

  • An undisclosed mental health app which aids patients with chronic health conditions, their caregivers and doctors.

Due to an NDA, I only cover broader insights and my main contributions and impact. To learn more about my work, please feel free to get in touch with me.

1

Designing for Multiple Stakeholders in the Healthcare Ecosystem

The main platform, VoxelBox Explore is used by:

  • Radiologists

  • Neurosurgeons

  • Psychiatrists

  • MRI Technicians

  • Hospital administrators in billing etc.

  • Clinical research teams

Through extensive user research I learned about the different needs each group had. Using these insights, I then designed role based access control features to produce a scalable, efficient and user friendly design.

2

Accounting for Healthcare and Other Regulations

Through my work I actively collaborated with the regulations team and ensured that the designs were in line with various standards such as:

  • FDA, Software as a Medical Device (SaMD)

  • HIPAA

  • GDPR

  • ISO 13485

3

Generative Research for Early Product Development

  • For the undisclosed mental health app, I conducted various user interviews with caregivers, patients and doctors to understand their needs. I then triangulated the insights across all three.

  • I also conducted research on a version of VoxelBox Explore that can aid psychiatrists in the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of psychiatric conditions.

  • Identified unmet needs at the intersections of caregiving burden, patient experience, and clinical decision-making

This research directly informed:

  • The product scope and journey

  • Core user needs and risks

• Early experience principles for a new product

4

Usability Testing to Improve Existing Products

  • Conducted usability testing and UX audits to identify friction, confusion, and risk areas in the existing product, VoxelBox Explore.

Focused on high-impact areas including:

  • Role-based access control

  • Processing status visibility and transparency.

I then translated findings into design changes aligned with regulatory and security requirements

Outcome:

  • Improved clarity around evolving user needs

  • Reduced ambiguity in high-stakes workflows

5

Streamlined Operations and Product Delivery

  • Streamlined internal processes for delivering outputs to customers

  • Designed instructional materials and SOPs that were:

    • Easy to follow

    • Easy for new team members to be onboarded into

    • Transferable across owners and teams

    • Reduced friction in handoffs and project ownership

Outcome

  • Faster delivery timelines

• Reduced dependency on individual contributors

6

UX Writing

  • Responsible for the UX Copy across all products and platforms, ensuring that the language was easy to grasp for the multiple different stakeholders involved.

  • Developed content and copy guidelines for the team

My Takeaways

  • I learned to adapt and design better when working with the different constraints and fast paced life at an early stage start-up

  • The importance of cross team collaboration cannot be overstated. I learned so much from my colleagues who worked in the regulations teams, ML engineers and so much more. It helped me build products and really contribute to the start-up as a whole.

  • Healthcare is all about systems. I adopted systems thinking as second nature, learning to think about broader eco systems and multiple stakeholders and their needs.
